Spielerei 2

pencil on phototransfer on paper on stained wood

30 x 30 x 3 cm

The ongoing series “Spielerei” (“Playing”) by Brazilian artist José Gomes (*1968, lives and works in Cologne) is created in a tension between drawing and engraving. Gomes uses photos of endangered forests, especially the Brazilian rainforest, taken by satellites and drones. Transferred to paper and stained wood, these pictures are covered with layers of pencil in geometric shapes: graphic elements, inspired by the body paintings of local tribes or the structures of the aisles caused by the clearing of the woods.
